Narcos will always be remembered as one of Netflix’s first big hits, and we’re not talking about the new seasons. This isn’t to say the current Narcos: Mexico stories aren’t brilliant, but the first Narcos that premiered on the year 2015 is what solidified Netflix’s place as a great source for clever and another-level content.
The original Narcos follows the story of Pablo Escobar, the notorious Colombian drug lord, leader of the Medellin Cartel. In season 1, we see Escobar’s (Wagner Moura) rise to power, his early beginnings and how quickly he escalates as one of the richest men in the world. Season 2 follows his fall and ultimate capture. The two-season series also stars Boyd Holbrook and Pedro Pascal, who were praised for their performances as well as Moura.
Netflix hit the jackpot by putting out its best work in the early years, the story of Pablo Escobar is one that certainly captivates and attracts the needed attention. Narcos does cross the line at times, sure, but this can be seen as showing the gruesome reality of Escobar. The violence and gore escalate as Escobar becomes more powerful, and we have to remember this is based on true events.
After Escobar’s story concluded for Narcos, the series moved on to Narcos: Mexico. The new seasons follow Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo, the Guadalajara Cartel’s leader. Though it may not be as exciting as the first two seasons that focused on Escobar, it’s fun to see the continuity of the story as we are able to witness how Escobar’s fall affected other cartels around the world.
