8. House of Cards

The political drama premiered on Netflix in the year 2013, arguably becoming the streaming network’s first big hit series and changing the game for the service. House of Cards is an adaptation of the BBC miniseries from 1990 of the same name and stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. And before all the Kevin Spacey drama and controversy, House of Cards was a mind-blowing series.

House of Cards takes place in Washington, D.C., and follows Congressman Frank Underwood (Spacey) and his wife Claire Underwood (Wright) in their clever battle plan to become more powerful. Both are ruthless and ambitious.

After premiering, House of Cards received various awards and nominations, all mostly praising Spacey and Wright’s performances. Both took home Best Actress and Best Actor (respectively) in a Television Series Drama. But after being involved in serious allegations, Spacey was fired and did not appear in the sixth and final season. Instead, Wright took center stage.

Drama aside, Netflix would not have made it on the map had it not been for House of Cards. The political drama is worth watching. Now that the entire series is streaming on Netflix, it’s a great complete series to watch over a few weeks.
