16. Collateral

A pizza delivery man’s murder appears to be an easy case to solve, or so it may seem to the average person. However, detective Kip (portrayed by Carey Mulligan) quickly uncovers that witnesses know more than they are letting on, but why lie? Collateral sees Mulligan combing  through the case to find all possible suspects and motives.

No one guns down a seemingly innocent delivery man for a small reason. Kip is determined to get to the bottom of things and find out the true story and people responsible.

Collateral is an enticing mystery that makes you want to put on your detective hate, pour yourself a hot cup of coffee, and watch on the couch while taking notes. It’s not over-packed with drama or supersized twists that are out to outsmart you. Collateral isn’t trying to prove it knows better, it’s just here to place a mystery in front of you and make it interesting to solve.

Best of all, Collateral is a miniseries. With only four episodes, so we weren’t kidding when we suggested this is a mystery you can curl up on the couch to take on in one sitting. It takes its time telling the story and placing all the chess pieces for you, but it also don’t drag it more than it needs to. It is fully focused on the mystery and doesn’t shift away to follow other stories.

The British TV drama-thriller first aired on BBC Two, but distributed by Netflix for a larger audience to enjoy. With no second season in mind, Collateral is a good size treat if you are searching for something that won’t take too much of your time, but is mind-blowing nonetheless. The series also stars John Simm, Billie Piper, Nicola Walker and Jeany Spark.
