22. The Umbrella Academy

The Netflix original sci-fi drama is one of the biggest surprises you’ll find available on the streaming titan. Not only does the concept come off as confusing in the trailers, but it’s also safe to say that we are all tired of the superhero genre. Do we look forward to more MCU and DCEU? Sure, we’re already invested, but do we feel like jumping into a new story? Not really.

Well, watch The Umbrella Academy and that may change your mind! The series is unlike any other superhero show out there at the moment. At the center of it all, is a dysfunctional family with issues, resentment and grudges. But there is also unconditional love between them that is tough to break, as much as they try.

The hero drama is based on the graphic novels by Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) of the same name. The first season stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, Robert Sheehan, David Gallagher and others. Because the characters jumped into another dimension or point in time by the final episode (it’s a long story), the second season will follow a different cast.

Season 1 follows seven kids all adopted by a mysterious billionaire with the intention of training the kids to become heroes. What they all have in common, besides supernatural abilities, is that their mothers did not know they were pregnant until they gave birth.
