It never fails. One of the best aspects of Netflix’s monthly new releases is the chance to check out movies that you wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to watch. The festival selections, the elusive indies, the VOD exclusives and everything in between stream in tandem with the biggest box office hits and fan-favorite throwbacks, making for a diverse and always exciting viewing experience. This month, the super-indie mystery film Last Ferry comes to Netflix, and it’s among the movies that are worthy of checking out when you need a break from the blockbusters.

Inspired by the 2016 horror film The Wailing and the 2013 thriller Stranger by the Lake, Ramon O. Torres, who also wrote the script, stars in Last Ferry as lawyer Joseph, who ventures out of Manhattan to Fire Island with the prospect of exploring his sexuality. While he’s on Fire Island during its off-season, a stranger drugs and robs Joseph. In his drugged state, he witnesses a murder, almost getting killed himself. Joseph winds up in the care of Cameron (Sheldon Best), who he falls for while the murderer makes a comeback among Cameron’s friends.

Last Ferry comes as the feature directorial debut of director Jaki Bradley and was screened at multiple film festivals. The film was an official selection at Frameline 43, BFI Flate: London LGBT Film Festival, TVLFest and NCGLFF, where it received the Jury Award for Best U.S. Feature.

Last Ferry doesn’t have a consensus or score on Rotten Tomatoes due to lack of reviews from critics, meaning the audience who stumble upon the film on Netflix will have to make their own judgments without any preconceived notions. Make your own assessment when it debuts on March 11.
