Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. Saoirse Ronan and Greta Gerwig. Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg. You know, just some of the all-time acting and directing greats who frequently collaborate. While that last pairing might not bring their movies to the Academy Awards to win shiny trophies, Wahlberg and Berg (Wahlberg, if you will) have joined forces on some bankable big-screen hits across their previous four films. For their fifth, they’re coming to Netflix with Spenser Confidential, a comedic mystery-thriller that’s certainly among March’s best new releases.
Based on the novel Wonderland by Ace Atkins (loosely, at least) and characters created by Robert B. Parker, Spenser Confidential stars Mark Wahlberg as Detective Spenser, a former cop who’s more likely to make some trouble than stop it. Spenser gets released from prison and makes his official move out of Boston, until he finds himself persuaded into helping his mentor and one-time boxing coach Henry (Alan Arkin) will teach an amateur the ropes. Hawk (Winston Duke), armed with towering confidence, joins Spenser as he investigates the murder of two former colleagues.
Spenser Confidential comes from director Peter Berg, who also directed such movies as Friday Night Lights, Battleship, Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day and Mile 22. The film marks Berg’s fifth collaboration with Mark Wahlberg, one of Hollywood’s tightest movie-making pairings. Spenser Confidential also stars comedians Iliza Shlesinger and Marc Maron, Bokeem Woodbine and Austin Post, a.k.a. music superstar Post Malone. Be sure to check out the month’s starring film attraction when the action-comedy debuts on March’s first Friday.
