Ever heard of the phrase, “Always a bridesmaid, never the bride”? Ever lived it? Well, you can soak your sorrows in any number of romantic comedies that have been released over the years, especially last year’s BET originally movie Always a Bridesmaid. If you’re still bitter about love in the wake of Valentine’s Day, or you’re just looking for a good, relatable story to watch on the weekend, you’ll want to add the hilarious and heartwarming rom-com to your watch list.

Javicia Leslie stars in Always a Bridesmaid as Corina James, who finds herself continuously asked to be a bridesmaid for her friends’ weddings. Her constant role as the dutiful bridesmaid leads Corina to wonder if she will only be a bridesmaid for the rest of her life or if she will ever have the opportunity to walk down the aisle herself — or if she even wants to. To figure out her future, Corina jumps back into the dating scene to break the bridesmaid cycle and possibly find the love of her life.

Always a Bridesmaid comes from director Trey Haley, who also directed titles such as The Family Business, The Man in 3B and Throwback Holiday. The film was written by Yvette Nicole Brown, making her official screenwriting debut with a script she wrote 20 years ago. Always a Bridesmaid premiere on BET on Sept. 19, 2019, and landed a nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Television Movie at the NAACP Image Awards. Give the rom-com a watch when it makes its streaming debut on Netflix at the top of the month.
