Idaho: Mr. Potato Head

Is Idaho known for something besides potatoes? Probably, but here we are. Mr. Potato Head from Toy Story is the perfect representative.

He’s cynical, sarcastic, and borderline rude and wouldn’t you be, too, if everytime you told someone you’re from Idaho, they brought up something about potatoes? People of Idaho, I feel your pain (and also enjoy your potatoes).

But don’t dismiss Mr. Potato Head as just a cynical toy. He’s also one of Woody’s best friends, helps in all their adventures, is Mrs. Potato Head’s husband, and is the adoptive father of all the Little Green Men, aka the toy aliens. He has to be a  pretty good dude to do all that. He just hides it behind a rough exterior.

Just like Idaho hides behind their well-known image of being “the potato state” when they also happen to be the state where 72 different gemstones have been found. Idaho, are you literally “the diamond in the rough” state? How dare you hide this side of yourself?

Idaho also changes depending on where you are in the state, just like Mr. Potato Head changes his arms, facial features, and accessories. The majority of the state is in the Mountain time zone, but the area above the Salmon River is in the Pacific time zone. Sure, not as cool as changing out your arms, but it’s still really interesting. It’s only one of 13 states that is split by a time zone.

Despite his sometimes hostile exterior, Mr. Potato Head, above all things, is a good friend and someone who is ready for adventure if his friends need him. Could you ask for a better guy (toy?) to represent your state?
