30. The Breaker Upperers (movie)

What The Breaker Upperers is about: Mel (Madeleine Sami) and Jen (Jackie van Beek) are left heartbroken when they learn they are dating the same man. Most women would have fallen into depression and swear off dating until they recovered, but Mel and Jen take a more cynical route. They bond and decide to make sweet lemonade with the lemons life has handed to them and start a business they call The Breaker Upperers.

What they do is help break couples up for cold hard cash. Their agency offers services such as hiring them to plug themselves into your life to cause a breakup or simply deliver the message. It’s up to you, just be sure you’re ready to pay up. Is this the perfect business or will it be too emotionally exhausting for Mel and Jen?

Why you need to watch this: Can’t stand to watch another romcom? Watch The Breaker Upperers on Netflix instead! The movie adds a fun twist to the romcom by instead following the strong bond between two women who were wronged by the same men. As tough as the synopsis makes them appear, getting over a heartbreak is not that simple, and The Breaker Upperers portrays that perfectly.

No spoilers! But let’s just say Mel and Jen won’t both be dealing with their breakup the same way. Feelings and resentment will linger and tip over in an explosive fight. We’re also not sugar-coating this when we say this is not a romcom! It doesn’t feature predictable laughs or stories. Don’t go in expecting to feel butterflies in your stomach. What we love most about the movie is how real it can be when it comes to love, failed relationships, and sisterhood.

The Breaker Upperers premiered overseas, but made its international debut on Netflix in 2018, premiering just after Valentine’s Day. Despite its 90% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s considered an underrated gem! The chemistry between Mel and Jen is electric, and you’ll love the witty, dry humor! Don’t let another year go by and watch this ASAP.
