36. The Umbrella Academy (TV series)
Premiere date: Feb. 15, 2019
What The Umbrella Academy is about: In the year 1989, over 40 women give birth simultaneously around the world. The odd thing about this is that none of them were even aware they were expecting. In fact, the women were not even showing until the second labor began.
A billionaire, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, journeys to as many locations as possible to adopt some of the children. Since the women didn’t even know they were pregnant, it’s not difficult (for most) to give up their kids. But the eccentric billionaire has plans. These aren’t regular children, but gifted individuals with special powers, well, most of them!
Hargreeves begins to build a superhero team, The Umbrella Academy. Instead of being a caring and loving father, Hargreeves comes off as cold and doesn’t even give the children names, assigning them numbers, instead. Eventually, their robot mother (built by Hargreeves) names the children Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Ben, and Vanya. There’s also Number 5, but he mysteriously vanished before he was named.
Why you need to watch this: If the synopsis alone doesn’t already intrigue you, the trailer (which you can check out above) should do the trick! And unlike most slow burns and dramas, The Umbrella Academy wastes no time getting straight to all the action. Aside from robot nannies, talking apes, and a few far-fetched plots, the series is all about a family who loves each other unconditionally, even if they have a difficult time showing it.
The series was one of the most-watched shows on Netflix in the year 2019, with a reported viewership of 45 million households. Needless to say, The Umbrella Academy was quickly renewed for a second season, which is expected to drop sometime this year.
