4 good sports documentary series on Netflix
By Bryce Olin
Last Chance U, Cheer and more made our list of good sports documentary series to watch on Netflix right now!
Looking for a new sports documentary series to watch on Netflix? The streaming network has a great selection of sports docuseries to watch!
Below, we shared a list of four docs to watch on Netflix. We picked documentary series from four major sports: football, cheerleading, basketball and soccer.
Let’s get the list started with Last Chance U!
Last Chance U
Last Chance U is one of Netflix’s most popular documentary series. Created by Greg Whiteley, the series follows junior college football teams over the course of a season.
There are four seasons of Last Chance U available to stream on Netflix right now. The first two seasons focus on East Mississippi Community College, while the third and fourth seasons focus on Independence Community College in Kansas.
These aren’t just any random junior colleges, though. These schools are bringing in a ton of former D1 recruits and other players where things didn’t work out at bigger schools. They come to these small colleges to get better, get a degree and move on to four-year schools to play. Things work out for some guys, while it doesn’t for others.
This is one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen. If you like football or sports in general, this is the doc series for you.
Cheer
Cheer just premiered on Netflix earlier in 2020. The series follows the Navarro College Cheer Team, coached by Monica Aldama. This is one of the top cheerleading programs in the country, and audiences now get a look into all the blood, sweat, tears, and injuries that it takes to be so good.
The first season follows the team on their journey to win another National Championship.
I did not know cheerleading was this brutal. It’s wild! This is one of the most eye-opening sports documentaries I’ve ever seen.
This show is a huge success at Netflix. It blew up overnight, basically, on social media. This series is also from Greg Whiteley, like Last Chance U.
We’re hoping to see Cheer season 2 on Netflix!
Basketball or Nothing
Basketball or Nothing premiered on Netflix in August 2019. The Netflix original series follows the Chinle High School boys basketball team. Chinle is located on the Navajo Nation reservation in Arizona, and basketball offers an opportunity for some of the players to leave the reservation and attend college.
The first season follows the team through the season and their pursuit of the state championship.
I’m a huge basketball fan, and there are tons of great basketball documentaries. Basketball or Nothing is one of the best basketball docs I’ve ever seen.
First Team: Juventus
This one is for all the soccer fans! The series follows the Juventus Football Club from Italy as they try to win the Serie A and UEFA Champions League.
There’s no sport like European football. It’s wild! The passion from the fans, the pressure, the constant games. There’s like no time off for these players, especially those at the top-tier like Juventus. It’s all league games, championships, the Champions League, and then after the season, they play for their respective national teams. Then, they come back and do it all again at the end of the summer.
If you’re a soccer fan, you have to check out this documentary series as soon as you can. Even if you don’t like Juventus, this doc is a great behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s top football clubs.
