It’s time to move from one major film franchise to another. With the wrap up of Stars Wars with The Rise of Skywalker receiving mixed receptions, fans may be looking to jump ship while they digest the saga’s conclusion. Luckily, Netflix rings in the new year with The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Return of the King. They’re back on the streaming giant and ready to help you mourn one fantasy world by escaping into another.
Based on the books of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien, The Two Towers and The Return of the King follow up 2001’s massive opener The Fellowship of the Ring, which sadly won’t be available to stream and accompany two-thirds of the trilogy. In The Two Towers, Frodo (Elijah Wood) continues his quest with Sam (Sean Astin) and realizes they’re being followed by Gollum. The Return of the King concludes the trilogy with an epic final battle between good and evil.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Return of the King capped off an already successful film series and solidified its standing as one of the highest-grossing of all time with well over $2 billion grossed. The Return of the King won all 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture. Even though you can’t watch all three films on Netflix (right now), dive into the final two films for a thrilling adventure when they start streaming at the top of January.
