The new Netflix original series The Witcher starring Henry Cavill is the next great fantasy series!

The Witcher is now streaming on Netflix, and it’s awesome! Fans are loving the new Netflix original series based on the stories and characters from Andrzej Sapkowski’s books and adapted by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich.

Based on how good the first season is and how much story there is left to be explored in the world of The Continent, The Witcher has the potential to be one of the best fantasy shows ever. In a post-Game of Thrones world, it’s certainly the best fantasy show on TV and streaming right now.

It’s still very earlier into this series. We’ve only seen eight episodes, which means it’s hard to compare to any of the great fantasy shows with multiple seasons. We’ll have to wait and see what happens with this series moving forward and if it continues on the path to becoming one of the best Netflix shows yet.

The potential is clearly there for this show to be one of Netflix’s biggest shows yet, and that’s the most important takeaway after months and months of waiting to see this series.

We knew Netflix was going to give Hissrich and The Witcher team a ton of cash to make a great show possible. It’s all about execution, and to me, the show executes brilliantly. Pun intended!

It all starts with the cast. Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia is as good as he’s ever been. Based on some of the big projects he’s been a part of, I think we all knew he’d be good in this role, but he’s really good. Geralt doesn’t express himself verbally very well, but Cavill’s expressions, grunts, groans, and

Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan, who star in the series along with Cavill, are fantastic. I was blown away by how good Chalotra is as Yennefer. She delivers an incredible, award-worthy performance. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s nominated for a bunch of major awards over the course of the next year for her role in the series.

Hissrich and The Witcher team had to nail the cast of this show to make it work, and they did that, especially with Allan’s casting. According to a report from Digital Spy, Allan was supposed to play a different character in the series, but after Allan was cast, a team flew out to London for her to audition for the role of Ciri.

If they didn’t get Ciri completely right, and they definitely did with Allan, things could have been very different for this show. I don’t want to spoil anything for those who haven’t seen it, so I’ll leave it at that.

My favorite part of the series is the little glimpses into the world of Geralt, monster hunter. Instead of getting to hear about his many adventures, we get to see him on the job, killing monsters, and doing his best to save the day. And, it’s so messy. While a brilliant swordsman and fighter, Geralt routinely finds himself in situations where he is completed overmatched, and it’s wonderful. The last thing we want out of this series is another perfect hero, and yes, I do see him as a hero.

The show does an excellent job presenting Geralt to us by showing these ventures. It helps us better understand The Continent over time rather than presenting all the information in one fell swoop and giving Geralt a central mission or task. That will come later, but initially, we get to know these characters and understand the world. It’s the perfect entrance into the story.

I also really enjoyed how Princess Ciri and Yennefer are introduced. We learn so much about Yennefer earlier in the season, and we get to see the character change and grow. It’s much different from Ciri’s story. We get to learn about her, for the most part, while she’s on the run.

The first season was paced brilliantly, as well. There are so many powerful and heavy scenes in this show that it could become a slow, drawn-out story. It’s not. Each episode leaves the viewer wanting more, and that’s exactly what a Netflix show should be when we can binge-watch the full season at one time.

We don’t know what will happen with this series in the future, but we do know there will be on. Netflix has already renewed the series for season 2, and it’s scheduled to arrive on Netflix in 2021.

Regardless of what happens from here, The Witcher is in a great spot to become one of the most popular shows on TV!
