Michael Bay’s 6 Underground starring Ryan Reynolds and Mélanie Laurent is going to be a major hit for Netflix, flaws aside.

Michael Bay’s first Netflix original movie, 6 Underground, is now on Netflix, and it’s well on its way to becoming another smash hit for the streaming network.

In the movie, Ryan Reynolds plays One, a billionaire who faked his own death to go underground to stop the world’s biggest villains. He assembles a team of five others, numbered Two through Six, and played by Mélanie Laurent, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Ben Hardy, Adria Arjona, and Dave Franco. Corey Hawkins joins the team as Seven.

After one awful mission, the team sets its sights on a new on a dictator, Rovach Alimov, played by Lior Raz, who is using gas on his country’s people. The mission is regime change. They want to replace the leader with his brother who will, hopefully, bring the country back together.

Small spoiler: There are actually nine super-bad dudes that this team will be taking down. This story follows the first one.

I liked 6 Underground for the most part. I knew exactly what I was going to get, and it delivered in almost every way. There are so many flaws and things that don’t really make sense with this movie, but it doesn’t really even matter.

Bay goes all-out on the explosions, car chases, and big, bigGER, and BIGGEST action sequences. There are so many things going on in this movie, and it’s brilliant from that perspective. It’s bloated and distracting and downright weird at times, but it’s also amazing that it even exists. Only Netflix would throw caution to the wind and go for it like this, and for that, they deserve credit for allowing the ridiculous nature of the film to come into our homes.

It’s the first time I’ve ever said “Magnets?” while watching a movie.

This movie, probably, only works at Netflix. It’s basically non-stop action from start to finish, and it’s more than two hours long! The first 20 minutes of the movie is one car chase that would make the Fast & Furious franchise jealous.

It’s not the perfect story, but I do think Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, the writers of the film, did a good job. The characters are developed over the course of the film for the most part, and it feels like they are building for more. It looks like a 6 Underground franchise might be in the works. And, I think that’s really what Netflix was shooting for. If there’s one thing we know about Netflix, it’s that they like to fill popular genres with content.

The action genre is a money-maker, and as we’ve seen with Bright, Triple Frontier, and some of the other action movies Netflix has made, people will watch this movie.

I would not be surprised if 6 Underground becomes Netflix’s most-watched movie ever. The movie is landing at the perfect time, and it has a bunch of names people recognize behind this project. Michael Bay, although his movies lately have been misses, has a great track record in the action genre.

6 Underground is getting crushed by critics, but that’s not surprising. There are some serious flaws with this movie, including the regime change narrative, heavy-handed narration, pacing, overall story arc, and the end. But, even with all those flaws, this is an enjoyable action movie for those who enjoy cheesy action movies, explosions, car chases and other big action set pieces with likable characters and an occasional laugh.

If you don’t like those things, you’ll probably loathe this movie.
