When is Altered Carbon season 2 coming to Netflix? Fans can expect to see the new season of the series starring Anthony Mackie, Simone Missick and more in 2020.
Altered Carbon season 2 is officially in the works at Netflix! It’s been a minute since we’ve heard any big news about the series, and fans are anxious to find out any news about the series.
Below, we shared everything we know about the new season of the Netflix original series, including an expected release date, what happens next, the full cast, and more!
UPDATE: Altered Carbon season 2 is coming to Netflix in February 2020!
Altered Carbon season 2 will likely be released on Netflix in 2020. We don’t have an official release date from Netflix yet, but that’s when most fans are expecting to see the new season.
Because of all the CGI, effects and action sequences used to create a compelling series, Altered Carbon will likely take longer to film, edit and promote than most Netflix shows.
As you will see below, the show also has, basically, a new cast for season 2, and that brings its own challenges, as well. The actors need time to find their characters throughout the season, and the directors and storytellers need time to bring the best out of each actor.
Production on Altered Carbon season 2 started in February 2019. It will be at least February 2020 before we see the new season, and it could even be even a longer wait than that. Based on the when the season started filming, I’m guessing late summer or fall 2020 is when most fans should expect to see the new season.
Netflix, then, could promote the series at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2020. Either way, it will have been at least two years since the series premiered on Netflix before we see season 2.
Stay tuned for the official release date!
Netflix announced the cast of season 2 in a video around the time the season started filming. Take a look!
As mentioned, Altered Carbon has an almost entirely new cast for season 2. Joel Kinnaman will not be returning as Takeshi Kovacs. Instead, Marvel star Anthony Mackie will take over the role.
There are also a few returnees from season 1 playing the same characters in season 2, including Renée Elise Goldsberry, Will Yun Lee, and Chris Conner, according to TV Guide.
Newcomers for season 2 also include Simone Missick, Lela Loren, Dina Shihabi, Torben Liebrecht, and James Saito, according to Den of Geek.
What Happens Next
This is the question everyone has been asking after the first season of the series, and no one really knows where this story will go in season 2. We can only speculate at this point.
For those who don’t know, the second season is expected to be based on the second book of the series by Richard K. Morgan, Broken Angels. From what I understand, the first season, largely, followed the first book, but there were some significant changes that could affect the series down the line. In other words, we’re not getting a scene-for-scene, book-to-TV adaptation moving forward.
Most fans expect the second season to follow Kovacs, now played by Mackie, on a journey to reunite with Quell, played by Goldsberry. Many believed her dead in season 1, but there’s the possibility that she could be “alive,” according to the Den of Geek report.
Based on the cast, it looks like certain elements of Broken Angels will be included in the new season. In the book, Kovacs is working for Colonel Ivan Carrera (Liebrecht) as a mercenary. Carrera’s character has been cast in the new season, so it’s expected that storyline will be shown in some respect.
We also don’t know when, exactly, this series is set. The second book begins 30 years after the events of the first book, so it seems like there’s a chance this story will take place along a similar timeline.
That’s about all we know about Altered Carbon season 2! Stay tuned for more information about the new season!
