As the year comes to an end, we reflect on the Netflix movies that reigned supreme with a list of our favorite picks.

This wasn’t an easy list to compile. With so many titles to choose from, a lot of great movies didn’t make the cut. Without further ado and in no particular order, here’s a look at our 25 favorite Netflix movies of 2019.

Dolemite Is My Name

Nearly 40 years after Eddie Murphy’s big-screen debut as Reggie Hammond in 48 Hrs., there’s no denying the comedic genius that is Eddie Murphy. Many consider his latest role as Rudy Ray Moore in Dolemite Is My Name a triumphant moment in a long career. And we agree, which makes the Netflix Film more than worthy of being among the best of the year.

Starring Eddie Murphy, Keegan- Michael Key and Mike Epps, there’s some big star power behind this real-life story that also includes Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Snoop Dogg, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Wesley Snipes, Chris Rock, Tasha Smith and T.I.

So who exactly was Rudy Ray Moore? He was the foul-mouthed, slick-talking pioneer of comedy and rap whose personality was magnetic enough to make Blaxploitation films like Dolemite and The Human Tornado of the mid-1970’s cult classics.

Moore also inspired generations of artists to follow, including Richard Pryor, Big Daddy Kane and Snoop Dogg, and he made no apologies when it came to redefining comedy.

Not only did Dolemite Is My Name respectfully pay homage to the late Moore, but it also introduced a new generation to a comedic legend they more than likely hadn’t even heard of yet.
