Beauty and the Beast is an adaptation of a fairy tale written by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve of the same name. This fairy tale was originally published in 1740 with numerous remakes of this classic tale.

My favorite remake is Disney’s animated movie from 1991. The story is about a rich prince who is selfish and self-absorbed. He is turned into a Beast (Robby Benson) when he insults an enchantress, and a beast he will remain until he can learn to love and be loved. The enchantress leaves a rose that loses a petal after a certain amount of time. When the rose loses all of its petals, he will remain a beast for all eternity.

One day, Belle (Page O’Hara) comes to the Beast’s castle to rescue her father and makes a deal with the beast. She will stay if he releases her father and the beast agrees. So begins Belle and the Beast’s uneasy relationship.

Belle is charming and spirited and isn’t afraid to stand up to the Beast, who isn’t used to being defied. The characters in the castle are funny and endearing. The songs are great.
