Howard Stark’s Iron Man (Marvel’s What If?)

To avoid any confusion, the new version of Iron Man who’ll appear won’t be Tony Stark post-Endgame. Instead, the armored Avenger expected to show up is Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper). We’ve come to this conclusion because of the episode which revolves around Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) becoming Captain America instead of Steve Rogers.

Rather than merely crafting a shield for Captain America, Howard is rumored to be crafting a super-suit of his own design. The Iron Man graphic teased in the Marvel’s What If? logo being evidence of this.

While a minority of fans have mistakenly paired the Iron Man image with Zombie Captain America, the Iron Man helmet doesn’t share any similarities with the projections created by Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhall) in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

With Zombie Iron Man ruled out, the next best explanation for the graphic is that Howard Stark will become the world’s first iron Avenger. Howard’s comic counterpart didn’t have much technology to work with during his era but the MCU version has a SHIELD vault full of advanced weaponry that can be used to make an armored suit. SHIELD also confiscated Tesseract-infused equipment from Hydra so Howard already has a base to work with. All he needs to do is finetune an armor exactly the way Tony did back in 2008’s Iron Man.

The crazy thing is an Iron Man suit piloted by Howard Stark could dramatically alter the timeline. What If? already takes place in an alternate universe where Peggy Carter is Captain America, but Iron Man showing up 30 years ahead of his intended arrival would alter the landscape dramatically. Not only that, but Howard becoming Iron Man might change the outcome of his encounter with the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).

In the MCU canon, Howard and his wife were murdered by Bucky Barnes during an ambush. But if Stark were carrying a portable suit of armor with him, he might have been able to save them from Bucky’s onslaught. Tony struggled in his own fight with Bucky, but he ultimately came out of that bout victorious. Howard can feasibly do the same if he’s prepared for it.

Marvel’s What If..? series launches on Disney Plus in 2021.
