Jack Russell (Moon Knight)

Better known as Werewolf By Night, Jack Russell seems like a guaranteed addition to the Moon Knight series in development. It was announced at the D23 Expo earlier this year, though not many details were provided by Kevin Feige.

The good news, however, is that Russell has a storied comic history which provides us with all the information we need to determine who Werewolf by Night really is. Mind you, we can’t confirm whether or not Jack Russell’s television counterpart will be identical to the source material in the comics.

First off, the name really says it all. Werewolf by Night originally emerged on the eve of Jack Russell’s eighteenth birthday. It came as a result of the curse placed on his ancestor Grigori that passed from generation to generation.

When the curse emerges in Jack, he spends the better part of two years struggling to keep the beastly creature contained. Jack’s other half occasionally gets loose but he refrains from killing anyone during that time.

The real conflict came when Marc Spector aka Moon Knight showed up unexpectedly in Jack’s living room. He was apparently on a mission assigned by the Committee to bring the werewolf in, confronting Jack in his home. The misunderstood man managed to escape with help from his stepfather, of course, that only added to the tension of Jack Russell’s coming clash with Moon Knight.

There’s more to Werewolf by Night’s comic history, though the biggest takeaway is that he was one of Moon Knight’s first foes. They eventually got past their differences and became allies but fans shouldn’t count on seeing the live-action versions of Moon Knight and Jack Russell team up so soon.

Assuming Jack does play a part in Disney Plus’ Moon Knight series, he’ll probably be portrayed as a villain until the very end of season one. That way, the finale can be used to tease Jack’s transformation from a savage beast to a more controlled version of himself.

In doing so, Moon Knight’s writers could showcase a turnaround for Werewolf by Night in season two. Disney hasn’t revealed their full plan for Moon Knight, but if it consists of multiple seasons, we can count on both sides to Jack Russell being put on display.

Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight’s release date is TBA.
