Zombie Captain America (Marvel’s What If?)
Since San Diego Comic-Con dropped their massive panel on fans, there’s been more buzz about one particular show than the others: Marvel’s What If? series. The show will be set around Uatu The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) regaling us with tales of alternate timelines and universes, outside of the main continuity. One of these stories will presumably include the zombified version of Captain America.
The reason Zombie Cap is expected to make an appearance on Marvel’s What If? is that recent teases have hinted at a fight between Bucky Barnes and a zombified Captain America happening. This rumor in itself should tantalize fans looking forward to the animated series.
Audiences in attendance of Hall H at SDCC caught a glimpse at What if Peggy Carter Became Captain America during the sneak peek so there’s a good chance more stories will involve Steve Rogers. He probably won’t be in every episode of Marvel’s What If series but odds are he’ll show up in a few different ones. Perhaps we’ll even see the controversial Captain Hydra make an appearance.
As far as Zombie Cap goes, the context around how he’ll be introduced is still unclear. The route chosen could go into great detail and explore the mythology of how zombies came to be, or it could lead right into the zombies’ rise. Either way, an explanation for how the Marvel Zombies are created should be intriguing to dive into.
Additionally, the hints of Bucky Barnes fighting his former best friend is bound to touch on serious themes like guilt. We have no idea how Rogers dies —or how he’s resurrected—but odds are it could’ve been avoided had Bucky intervened.
