Ultron (WandaVision)

The latest iteration of Ultron isn’t canon in the MCU, but the sneak peek at a revived version of the villain in Avengers: Damage Control VR has us thinking that the android could resurface.

In a story trailer for the VR experience, Doctor Strange (Stephen Cumberbatch) starts off by informing the viewers that a threat from the past has resurfaced. Ultron’s ominous voice can then be heard in the background saying “the Avengers fail to see the big picture.” No explanation is needed as Ultron’s psychotic mindset is clear proof of why he believes himself to be the hero.

What’s of more interest is the army he’s amassed since facing destruction in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The cybernetic organism appears to have another army of drones at his disposal, as well as a gigantic version of himself to control. The remaining Avengers can stop the invasion but they’re clearly going to have a difficult time without Captain America or Iron Man on hand.

How Ultron pertains to WandaVision is that the robot has an ax to grind with both Vision (Paul Bettany) and Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). Maximoff was the one who ripped Ultron’s core from his chest and Vision stole the AI’s chance at having an indestructible body. Vision still needs to be resurrected, though the hints at Wandavision indicate he’ll be brought back in some form.

If both Ultron and Vision are resurrected for WandaVision, they may wind up once again battling each other for the right to live. Vision pointed out in Age of Ultron that he did not wish to kill his predecessor but did so for the sake of humanity. And since Ultron more than likely values the same things, his goal of world domination probably hasn’t changed.

Marvel Studios’ WandaVision is scheduled for release on Disney Plus in 2021.
