South Park just wrapped up its’ twenty-third season, though only after six episodes. Does this mean Comedy Central is cutting back on the animated series?

Unlike prior seasons of the adult-animated comedy, South Park season 23 ended with a mere six episodes. In comparison to season 22 and 21 which consisted of ten, the switch came as a surprise to us. What’s of more intrigue is that South Park recently received a renewal for three more seasons through 2022.

CORRECTION: South Park season 23 is not ending early. The season’s latest episode was titled “Season Finale.” South Park returns with a new episode next week.

Due to the early extension being made, Comedy Central expanding the season length makes more sense than having it shortened. But of course, now we know that Episode 2306 would be the last until season 24 premieres. A release date has yet to be announced.

The silver lining to the short season is that Trey Parker and Matt Stone could be working on another set of episodes as we speak. Since the duo spent less time working on their show this year, perhaps they’re planning ahead. It would behoove Stone and Parker to have a plan laid out for when the 2020 elections roll around.

While South Park’s creators avoided talking about President Trump and politics in season 23, they won’t be able to resist the temptation to touch on the 2020 elections next year. There’s no telling what’ll happen, but considering the number of candidates campaigning, it’s fair to say some hilarious dialogue will be exchanged during the debates. Parker and Stone will then have commentary to share.

Are South Park’s creators working on something else instead?

We should mention that the show’s creators have expressed their interest in producing a feature-length film. The duo told The Hollywood Reporter back in September that they have ideas unrelated to South Park in the works, confirming their future plans. They didn’t provide a release date or even a projected timeframe, leaving us somewhat puzzled. However, the mere hint suggests Parker and Stone are eying possible dates within the near future.

It’s impossible to confirm our theory, but seeing as how season 23 concluded rather abruptly, Parker and Stone might be well into developing the films spoken of above. They could just be taking a break from working, though odds are South Park’s creators have a new project to focus on.

Theories aside, the comedy duo will likely provide fans with an update sooner rather than later. The question is: What will their next announcement be?
