Alyvia Alyn Lind discusses Angelica in the apocalypse world in Daybreak
Alyvia Alyn Lind adds fire and spirit to the apocalypse world in Daybreak. In this exclusive interview, she shares the development of the character and more.
Alyvia Alyn Lind has taken on the colorful, mischievous role of Angelica in Daybreak. This is a girl who likes fire, explosions and causing havoc. In a way, she reminds me of Tiny Tina from the Borderlands game (and yes, I’ve mentioned it to Alyvia that she needs to at least Google the character to find out who she is).
While Alyvia may not know who Tiny Tina is, we did get to chat about Angelica and all the layers that came with this character. Isn’t she one of the best characters on Daybreak?
Netflix Life: I adore everything about Angelica. She has all these layers. What was it initially that pulled you into this role.
Alyvia Alyn Lind: I love that it was something different to the usual roles for kids my age.
NL: At what point did you know that the storytelling would jump to different viewpoints? That you’d get your own episode?
Lind: From the very beginning, I knew I was going to get that chance, and it was so exciting. We had a few weeks of practice and they sent the scripts out really really far in advance, which was so great.
I was totally freaking out when I figured out I’d get to narrate an episode because that was one of my acting dreams. And it was so much fun to get to do it.
I also loved that I didn’t break the fourth wall. I got to do voiceover and I talked over, and it switches to her own thing.
I loved that we got to see everybody’s point of view of the Apocalypse through their own eyes.
NL: It gave us a chance to see Angelica’s internal feelings, worrying about her mom and this need to find a family. What was that like for you being able to fully develop the character?
Lind: Well, when I first started developing Angelica, I, like you said, I definitely wanted to make sure she had all these layers and make sure that she wasn’t just a bratty 10-year-old who missed her mom, but that she is a strong character to is a regular 10-year-old girl in the middle of an Apocalypse. She’s scared, as we all would be.
I think that, in the end, she finally decides that she doesn’t have her mom right now, but she does have this tribe behind her and that was pretty great, too.
NL: I love that everyone in the tribe was completely different but they all found something to connect over.
Lind: Yeah! And that’s also very funny because as a cast, we were all like that. We don’t all like the same things, but we literally hang out every weekend. We’re all so different, but we all find something that we can connect over.
NL: What has been your favorite moment on the set of Daybreak?
Lind: Oh, that’s a hard question because there are so many amazing moments. Probably my Doc Martins wheelies. I got to roll around on the wheels. When I first saw them, I almost started crying. it was like my childhood dream come true.
I love Doc Martins so much, and when they said they were putting wheels in them, I was like, “Okay, I’m in!”
NL: They were so Angelica, especially with the unicorn, multicolored onesie.
Lind: Yes, for sure.
NL: You come from a big acting family. I loved your mom [Barbara Alyn Woods] in One Tree Hill and your sisters [Natalie Alyn Lind and Emily Alyn Lind] in The Gifted and Revenge. Did you feel pressure to get into the acting business too or was this just something you felt you wanted to do anyway?
Lind: I never had any pressure to go into it. When I was a little girl and I was just starting, my mom would always tell me I could decide what I wanted to do. I’ve always wanted to do it, always had this passion.
NL: Is it easier having your mom and sisters there to help with the development of characters?
Lind: For sure! We all help each other so much. I mean, whenever we have auditions, even ones where we’re going up against each other, we help each other. We congratulate each other on getting their parts. We’re never jealous of the other one getting a role we wanted.
NL: That’s awesome! I love a family that supports each other in such a competitive world. So, if there was a dream role that you could do, what would that be? Absolutely anything in the world.
Lind: Oh, that’s another crazy question! I don’t think it’s the role, I think it’s more of who I’d like to work with. I think it would be a role with someone I haven’t worked with before. Probably Margot Robbie, because she’s my favorite and she’s so talented and gorgeous. Her portrayal of Harley Quinn was so great, and I would love to play a younger Harley Quinn or something.
NL: I could see you playing Harley Quinn. Now we need your reps to talk to her reps to make it happen!
