22. The Get Down

Canceled after: 1 season

I warned you there were other shows on this list that were only given a one-season chance to build an audience. The Get Down‘s cancellation is a real shame and was felt by its fans as they tried to petition for renewal. As you’ve probably already guessed, it didn’t work.

Even though The Get Down was canceled nearly three years ago, it doesn’t feel like that much time has passed. This is probably because the musical drama is still being discovered by audiences today. The first season, which is broken up into two parts, is streaming on Netflix if you would like to check it out, as many continue to do.

The Get Down is set in the South Bronx region of the beautiful New York City in the late 1970s. It’s colorful, full of life, and you’ll love the music! Viewers are able to have a look at the birth of hip-hop and disco through the eyes of a group of friends. There’s Zeke, a poet, Shaolin, a graffiti artist and aspiring DJ, and Mylene, who dreams of being a disco singer. Besides music, The Get Down also touches on hard-hitting topics such as poverty and gang violence.

Part 2 takes us to 1978. We continue to follow the same characters, but they’re older, facing adulthood and different issues.

One of the things I love most about The Get Down is its unique start. Each episode begins with MC Brooks giving a quick recap of the previous episode and a teaser of what’s to come next, in a song. There are not many other episode intros I’ve found that can beat that!
