23. Seven Seconds
Canceled after: 1 season
Seven Seconds was canceled after one season, guys. One season, which consisted of 10 episodes. Let that sink in, because there are others on this list that were also not given a fair chance to continue.
The crime drama series is based on The Major, a Russian film that premiered in February 2018 and is also on Netflix. The movie attracted a decent following, so the streaming giant thought it would be a fine idea to create a series out of it. On paper, it was brilliant, but I can only suppose it didn’t resonate with audiences because it was canceled shortly after debuting.
To be fair, the cancellation is justified (at least, to Netflix) due to it being a “limited series.” But, if you ask me, there could have definitely been room for more. This could have turned out to be a great anthology crime drama!
Season 1 follows the investigation of the death of Brenton Butler, a young black teen, in Jersey City. The community is devastated by the loss, and everything surrounding this tragedy is sketchy. It’s no spoiler to reveal that the boy was accidentally killed by Peter Jablonski, a white police officer. A shocked and scared Jablonski calls some of his friends on the force to cover it up. It’s a series that will enrage you but is necessary to watch as it’s not too far from the truth nowadays.
An anthology series would have worked if Seven Seconds followed more similar cases. Instead, Netflix decided to close it all down.
