Since Netflix has gotten into the game of mostly fluffy Christmas fare and continues to be the home of our favorite throwback movies, it can be hard to remember that it’s also playing the awards season game.

Apart from the Christmas movies we all signed up for and the throwbacks we’ll be marathoning all month, the streamer sprinkles a few Oscars contenders here and there throughout the month. The history-making Atlantics could very well win some gold, and it’s without a doubt one of the month’s best new release movies.

Atlantics takes place on the Atlantic coast in the suburb of Dakar, Senegal, where a futuristic tower looms over the community and its residents. The film follows 17-year-old Ada (Mame Bineta Sane), who’s in love with construction worker Souleimane (Ibrahima Traoré) even though she’s promised to someone else. When Souleimane and his co-workers end up lost at sea, they soon return to their neighborhood to haunt their girlfriend. Unrest over the tower follows next, but Souleimane has come back to spend one final moment with Ada.

Atlantics comes from director Mati Diop, who makes her feature directorial debut with the film. Diop made history when she became the first black female director to have her film premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and compete for the highest prize at the festival, the Palme d’Or. Atlantics was ultimately awards the Grand Prix and was selected as the Senegalese entry for Best International Feature Film at the upcoming Academy Awards. Don’t miss Netflix’s game-changing film when it makes its streaming debut at the end of the month.
