It’s a proven fact that sometimes you just need to watch a ’90s movie to hit reset and get back to basic. Unfortunately, some of the best ’90s movies aren’t coming to Netflix this month, but really all it takes is one movie — any movie — from the ’90s to get the job done. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, from 1998, hits our watch lists this month, and that’s great news for fans of the cult classic and anyone in need of anything originating from the 1990s.
Based on the 1971 novel of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas stars Johnny Depp as Raoul Duke and Benicio Del Toro as his attorney Dr. Gonzo. Together, the pair drive a red convertible across the Mojave Desert en route to Las Vegas. They make their jaunt with a suitcase full of drugs in order to cover the cost of a motorcycle race, but as the pair continues to take more and more drugs, their arrival in Las Vegas has them fearing legal ramifications. Duke heads back to Los Angeles, only to return to Vegas for another drug binge.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas comes from director Terry Gilliam, who also helmed such films as Monty Python and the Holy Grail, 12 Monkeys, The Brothers Grimm and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Upon release, the film received a mixed reception from critics, holding a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, and bombed at the box office. However, it has since lived on as a cult favorite among fans of the author. See what all the fear and loathing is about at the top of November.
