Broadway fans are going to especially enjoy this latest Netflix original film. American Son adapts the play of the same name and retains the kinetic feeling of theater. Kerry Washington, who earned Emmy nominations for her role in Scandal and will next star in Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere alongside Reese Witherspoon, anchors the film with a fearless and powerful performance that’s sure to get people talking about American Son this awards season.

Based on the play of the same name by Christopher Demos-Brown and adapted by the same writer, American Son centers on Kendra Ellis-Connor (Kerry Washington) as she seeks for answers about her missing teenage son. Kendra tries to put the pieces of her son’s disappearance together in a Miami, Florida police station, where she joins forces with his father (Steven Pasquale). The film also stars Jeremy Jordan and Eugene Lee, who reprise their roles with Pasquale, to present four distinct perspectives in this story of an interracial couple fighting for their son.

American Son comes from director Kenny Leon, who has also directed episodes of popular television series such as Ghost Whisperer, Private Practice and Dynasty. He also directed The Wiz Live! and Hairspray Live! for NBC and has left quite a mark as a director on Broadway, winning a Tony for Best Director in 2014 for A Raisin in the Sun. The play adaptation first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September ahead of its worldwide streaming debut on Netflix at the top of November. You don’t want to miss this performance from Kerry Washington.
