Because there’s so much new content coming to Netflix this month (and every month), it can be difficult for each new original title to attain the level of buzz it requires to become a breakaway hit on the platform. Naturally, the spotlight has been placed on the new holiday content arriving in November, as well as the star-studded Oscar-bait films, leaving little room for smaller originals, like the preceding films and Earthquake Bird, a mystery period piece that’s one of the month’s best new releases.

Based on Susanna Jones’ 2001 novel of the same name, Earthquake Bird takes place in Tokyo, Japan in 1989 and stars Alicia Vikander as Lucy Fly. An ex-pat still troubled by her past, Lucy finds herself falling into a relationship with Teiji (Naoki Kobayashi), who also becomes involved with Lily Bridges (Riley Keough). Their tumultuous love triangle comes to an end when Lily’s reported missing and presumed dead, leaving Lucy a suspect in her murder.

Earthquake Bird comes from director Wash Westmoreland, who also directed such films as The Last of Robin Hood, Still Alice and Colette. The film made its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival before receiving a limited theatrical release on Nov. 1. Earthquake Bird boasts producer Ridley Scott and features Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander in the lead, which only means that this is one mystery film that will have us hanging onto every moment. Give the film a watch when it makes its streaming premiere on Netflix halfway through November.
