Why put it on your list: You’ve likely seen the trailer for The King pop up plenty of times on Facebook. Out at the beginning of November, it’s no surprise that Netflix wants you to have it at the forefront of your mind. And that’s where it belongs to sit.
For historical fiction fans, this is immediately going to catch your attention. It’s set in the time of Henry IV and Henry V. In fact, it’s a retelling of Shakespeare’s plays about the two monarchs, focusing more on the young King Henry V and his victory at Agincourt.
For those who need more character development, you’ve got it! The movie delves into the friendship between Henry and the fictionalized (by Shakespeare) Falstaff, an older knight who is a womanizing man struggling with arthritis but with plenty of advice.
Think the royalty always wanted to lead men into battle? Think they all wanted that throne? Think again! The King starts with a young Prince Hal, who doesn’t really want the responsibilities of the crown. Soon he realizes that he won’t get a choice in the world.
It also helps that this movie is packed with high-profile actors that you’ll want to see on your screen, including the young Timothée Chalamet in the lead.
