10. Hillbilly Elegy

Who’s in it: Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Gabriel Basso, and Haley Bennett are all attached to Hillbilly Elegy.

Why put it on your list: While the cast is certainly a drawn—who isn’t looking forward to Adams and Close opposite each other?—there is much more going for this movie. One of those is the fact that Ron Howard has directed the movie.

Based on a novel of the same name by J.D. Vance, Vanessa Taylor has adapted the screenplay. It’s actually a memoir, although the movie has adapted the story for the masses. After all, despite being a personal memoir, Vance’s story because a personification of the white underclass struggles in everyday life. There were discussions of privilege and race throughout.

Set in the Rust Belt, which is where the movie was also partially filmed, we follow a family suffer from economic and social hardship, addiction and more. The family is raised by Mamaw, a larger-than-life grandmother who loved education and just wants the best for her family.

We should see plenty of love, family, and support. Although there will definitely be some drama thrown in there. While Netflix doesn’t have a release date just yet, it shouldn’t be too long.
