14. The Two Popes

Who’s in it: Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce are the two leads to the film. It also stars Sidney Cole, Lisandro Fiks, Thomas D. Williams, Maria Ucedo, and Emma Bonio.

Why put it on your list: This Netflix movie has a small cast but a good one. Putting Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins on the screen together is excellent, and certainly immediately led to intrigue for the movie.

It’s not surprising that the release at the Telluride Film Festival and then the Toronto International Film Festival also helped to boost the anticipation for the movie. It’s even one of those getting a limited release in the theaters before heading to Netflix.

This may not have been an interest to many at first. However, it quickly gained the attention of the critics. There’s plenty of humor in a movie that has a religious setting.

We get a look behind the walls of the Vatican. Pope Benedict and the future Pope Francis need to find common ground if they want to support the future of the Catholic Church. It’s certainly not going to be easy when they have opposing views on many aspects, but they will try.

The movie will be released on Netflix on Dec. 29, 2019.
