Black Summer’s future is unknown, but Netflix should revive Z Nation instead

The prequel series to Z Nation hasn’t officially been canceled yet, but that conclusion seems inevitable. When it happens, Netflix could be in the position to renew SyFy’s flagship series rather than their own. The question is: Will Netflix take such a gamble?

Despite taking a grittier approach to the zombie genre with Black Summer, the Netflix spin-off, isn’t doing as well as its SyFy channel counterpart. Season 1 completed its run earlier this year and there’s been no word of a renewal happening.

Such a delay may not seem like a big deal, but Netflix is known for giving out early renewals to most shows. The longer we have to wait hear the news, the lower the chances of a renewal. Black Summer failing to grab one suggests that it failed to hit the mark with audiences.

While there’s a chance we could be wrong about Black Summer’s fate, this feels like a better opportunity to revive Z Nation instead.

Fans are still crazy about the SyFy series, consistently showing their love to it on social media. Some have even suggested that Netflix give up on the prequel to bring back SyFy’s flagship series. Mind you, there are a few hurdles in the way of this actually happening.

For one, both SyFy and Netflix’s team of executives would have to approve of the continuation. They’d also need Karl Schaefer and John Hyams to sign off on the project. Since Schaefer and Hyams served as co-executive producers on Z Nation and then later as showrunners on Black Summer, their collaborations would be necessary.

Secondly, all parties need to agree on changing the tone back from dark and serious to something more lighthearted. Schaefer and Hyams are capable of doing both but a humorous take seems to be more suitable for Z Nation’s plot.

Getting the cast back together would be the final piece of the puzzle. Most of the actors/actresses who made an appearance at 2018’s SDCC (San Diego Comic-Con) seemed enthusiastic during the Z Nation panel, so it’s probably fair to say they’d be willing to reprise their roles again. It’s also a plus that not much time has passed since Z Nation concluded its televised run.

As long as those three components fall into place, we could potentially see a sixth season of Z Nation in the near future. Its’ future depends on Netflix so fans need to start petitioning for a continuation if they truly want more episodes.
