Stranger Things 3 tops the list of the 10 most popular Netflix shows of the year

Stranger Things 3, The Umbrella Academy, and You headline the list of the most popular Netflix shows of the year so far.

Netflix just shared the list of the most popular shows of the last year, according to a report from The New York Times. Many of your favorites made the list, but there are a few titles that will definitely surprise you.

Stranger Things 3, of course, was the most popular show of the year. It was the most popular show of all time for Netflix with about 65 million households watching in the first four weeks of its release. Netflix confirmed that number in their most recent letter to investors.

Stranger Things will probably always be the most popular show on Netflix. Stranger Things 4 is going to be huge!

While Stranger Things 3 is not a huge surprise, some of the other additions are at least a little surprising. The Umbrella Academy was always going to be a huge show. The comic book series of which the show is based on is very popular, and I knew there would be a ton of those fans tuning in. I didn’t know, however, that it’d be the second-most popular show of the year so far! That’s terrific for Netflix. Luckily, the show is coming back for season 2, hopefully, in 2020.

Two Spanish originals also made the list, Elite and La Casa de Papel. Each of these titles are really good, and we highly recommend them to any who haven’t seen the shows yet.

You, which is a new Netflix original, was a huge success when it launched on Netflix in December, and it’s become a huge hit. Originally, the show was actually on Lifetime for its first season, but Netflix picked it up, and now, it’s an international success. You season 2 premieres on Netflix soon!

It’s not surprising to see Dead to Me, Sex Education, When They See Us, Our Planet, or Unbelievable on the list. Netflix just announced Unbelievable was watched by more than 30 million households in the first month after its premiere.

According to the report, the viewership was calculated between October last year and September of 2019, so it’s not exactly accurate, but it’s the best look we’ll get at Netflix viewership. Additionally, there are some issues with this. The shows that have been available to stream for a longer amount of time are going to have more viewers, right?

So, Unbelievable, which is no. 7 on the list, has only been out for less than two months, but You has been out for almost 10 months. To accurately compare these shows, we’d want to look at how many people watched in the first month, first six months, and the first year after the release. We’ll probably never get a look at that information, but it’d likely paint a more accurate picture of how popular the shows actually are.
