Unbelievable watched by 32 million households on Netflix

According to Netflix, Unbelievable has been watched by 32 million member households. Impressive numbers, but here’s why it’s important that viewership doesn’t stop there.

Unbelievable on Netflix showcases the harsh truth behind rape accusations, highlighting why it’s crucial we believe women and pursue every case. The crime drama follows Marie, an 18-year-old woman in Lynnwood, Washington the morning after she is woken up by an intruder who proceeds to rape her on-and-off for hours. The rapist is careful not to leave behind any tracks, a sign of a serial rapist.

Soon enough, the series presents our two heroes — Detective Grace Rasmussen (Tori Collette) and Karen Duvall (Merritt Wever), who, after realizing they are each going after the same guy, team up to find this serial rapist. The most maddening fact about the series is that is it based on a true story. Not only that, but the way Marie’s case was handled is infuriating (but so important) to watch.

To keep it short, no one believed her and she was even charged with a misdemeanor for filing a false report. Marie’s story didn’t “add up,” according to detectives, when she couldn’t keep her story straight. But, after such a traumatic experience and being interrogated by several authorities for long hours, forcing her to repeat and relive the tragedy, can you blame her?

Unbelievable on Netflix is one of the streaming giant’s best series to date. It’s important the show continues with more seasons, each drawing attention to a pressing matter that needs to change.

In the case of season 1, that matter is the importance of believing women and how the justice system, particularly special officials handling rape cases, needs to change.
