The Walking Dead season 10, episode 2 highlights: The Whisperers’ backstory
By Paul Zuniga
In The Walking Dead season 10, episode 2, the Whisperers are front and center for the action. More of their backstory is also told in “We Are The End Of The World.”
After the season 10 premiere, The Walking Dead changed focus this week by following the Whisperers instead of Michonne’s crew over at Hilltop.
Episode 2, “We Are The End of The World,” gave viewers a glimpse into how Alpha (Samantha Morton) and Beta (Ryan Hurst) met, and it explored who these two characters are on a deeper level. Beta, for instance, wears the skin of someone very important to him.
Audiences learn in “We Are The End Of The World” that Beta’s mask didn’t just belong to a random person—he chose the skin carefully. It was also the only way to keep Beta’s beloved with him. He initially refused to leave his shelter behind because of his companion, but Alpha offered him the knife, which pushed him in the right direction, so to speak.
Another highlight from the episode revealed that Alpha still has a nest prepared for Lydia (Cassidy McClincy) when she returns. Beta believed his leader when she said that Lydia was dead but changed his tone as soon as he learned the truth. Beta’s reaction doesn’t necessarily mean a power struggle is coming but Betas eventually become Alphas for a reason.

In any case, Alpha’s feelings for her daughter make her a liability. She and Beta have no tolerance for lowly sentiment in their herd, which means a conflict could be brewing. If she does compromise the group’s safety to bring Lydia home, Alpha will lose their support in an instant. And once Beta sniffs the blood in the water, he’ll jump at the opportunity to become their leader.
There is, however, a possibility that season 10 of The Walking Dead will follow the comics closer than we think.
Spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead comics!
In that scenario, we could see Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) kill Alpha before the season’s end. Beta would then assume control as their de facto leader just like his comic counterpart did. Of course, that also places Negan next in line to become the Whisperers’ Commander In Chief.
Regardless, if it were up to us, Carol (Melissa McBride) should be the one who puts Alpha in a grave. She killed Henry (Matt Lintz) and the other survivors out of pure contempt so it’s only fitting that Carol exacts her vengeance. Carol has to contend with Beta following her fight with Alpha but we all know Daryl (Norman Reedus) would be there to support her on that front.
