4. The majority of season 4 will take place outside of Hawkins

This one might be a given, but the catchphrase “We’re not in Hawkins anymore” suggests that we might not be seeing as much of Hawkins, Indiana as we have been throughout the past three seasons. My first thought was that we would probably see the majority of the season take place in Eleven and the Byers’ new home wherever they moved in the season 3 finale. The phrase also immediately reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, suggesting that another candidate for their new home could be Kansas (at least that was my first reaction).

However, after digging a little deeper, I started to think more metaphorically, as I tend to do with announcements like this! It could be a stretch, but I wonder if it could mean that Hawkins is being taken over by the Upside Down, supporting a theory mentioned earlier. “We’re not in Hawkins anymore” could very well mean that they’re not really in Hawkins anymore after it got taken over by the Upside Down.

The vines and other Upside Down matter growing over the logo also make me think that the Upside Down is somehow “leaking” out into the real world more than we’ve ever seen before.

5. Time travel will be a factor in season 4

Okay, I know it might sound a little “out there” or crazy, but after seeing Demogorgons, a giant monster, and kids with powers, I don’t think anything is out of the question for a show like Stranger Things.

A lot of clues we’ve gotten so far have involved time, clocks ticking, and a Big Ben-type chiming at the end of the announcement video. All of these time references could point to going forward or backward through time.

There are a few questions and theories being raised that are related to clocks and time, and the whole 80’s feel of the show doesn’t rule out a possible Back to the Future style plot point. What if they go back somehow to change things?

The clock’s ticking could also mean that time is running out for Eleven or the rest of the gang. Maybe they’re saying that it’s time for Eleven and Joyce to go back and find Terry Ives for help. This would also support David Harbour’s ever-changing Instagram, discussed thoroughly on this thread on Reddit.

There’s so much to unpack in this announcement and these theories only scratch the surface of the many questions we have heading into the road to season 4.
