27. The Sword in the Stone
The Sword in the Stone is one of the more overlooked Disney films. You might not have even heard of it before this. The movie is based on the story of young Arthur before the round table and Lancelot and Guinevere. But in this, Arthur is an orphan, so when the King dies, there is no known heir.
But then a big rock appears in London with a sword stabbed into it. The deal is that whoever removes the sword will be made king. Many people try, but no one can pull it out. The rock is then forgotten until years later.
A young Arthur is looking for an arrow in the woods when he meets Merlin. Merlin sees potential in Arthur and tells him that he’ll tutor him. Arthur brings Merlin back to the castle where he lives which is run by Sir Ector, Arthur’s foster dad.
Now that the kingdom has given up on the sword in the stone, a jousting tournament is announced and now, whoever wins that will become king. Ector decides his son will enter and Arthur will be his squire.
Until then, Arthur begins his lessons with Merlin which includes reading, science, and magic. During one of these lessons, Arthur meets Madam Mim, an evil witch who is Merlin’s enemy. Luckily, Merlin arrives to save Arthur from Mim and they battle it out.
Unfortunately, Arthur and Merlin then fall out with each other when Arthur becomes a squire and wants to play war games more than he wants to study (can you really blame him?).
Once at the tournament, Arthur misplaces his foster brother’s sword and finds the rock with a sword in it and easily pulls it out. Sir Ector sees it and puts it back into the stone, demanding Arthur pull it out again. He does it again and becomes King.
The film finishes with Merlin looking into the future and seeing the great man Arthur will become.
