If you’re going to watch Up, you’re going to need at least half a box of tissues. It all begins with Carl who is a huge fan of the explorer, Charles F. Muntz, and one day, Carl meets a fellow Muntz fan, Ellie who he soon falls in love with and they grow up together.
When Ellie has a miscarriage, they are told they can’t have children but they don’t let it get them down entirely as it allows them to remember their dream of visiting Paradise Falls. They save up for it, but other things always get in the way that they need the money for. But finally, Carl books the trip. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes and Ellie falls ill and dies.
Are you crying yet? *sobs*
The next time we see Carl he is living in the same house he had with Ellie and is holding out while the rest of the homes are being torn down and replaced. When he injures one of the construction workers, he’s ordered to move to a retirement home. Instead, he plans to keep his promise to his wife to make his house into an airship. How does he do this? By attaching a bunch of helium balloons, of course!
What Carl doesn’t know is that Russell, a young boy who went to visit Carl to get a merit badge for helping the elderly, is also on board when he takes off.
Together they go on a journey around the world and land just opposite Paradise Falls. The two harness themselves to the house and start to walk across the land, hoping to reach the falls before the balloons completely deflate.
This is such a heartwarming story that will punch you in the heart and have you sobbing your eyes out. It is totally worth it though.
