11. The Princess Diaries
While The Princess Diaries 3 won’t come out for a while, the first movie will be on Disney Plus for everyone to re-watch. The movie became an instant classic and started Anne Hathaway’s career. (It also shows Mandy Moore as a mean girl, which I always appreciate)
What girl (or boy) hasn’t thought that they might be long-lost royalty? I thought I was Anastasia for much of my childhood not knowing that I’d have to be much older to be her lol.
But that dream does come true for Mia Thermopolis, a shy, awkward high school student in San Francisco. She has a crush on the most popular boy in school, Josh and is often bullied by his girlfriend, Lana. Her only friends are Lily and Lily’s brother, Michael who has feelings for Mia.
One day, she comes home from school to find her estranged paternal grandmother she’s never met and who tells her that she is a princess of Genovia. Her father has recently died and she is the next heir to the throne.
But before she can take the throne, she needs a makeover and then must go through multiple “princess lessons”. She has three weeks to make her final decision on whether she wants to be a princess or not. She also meets Joe, her chauffeur, who quickly becomes a confidante.
Everything seems to be going fine until her school finds out.
Everyone treats her differently, even Lily who is upset that Mia doesn’t have time to hang out anymore. But Mia has her responsibilities and has to be ready for her first state dinner. When it comes time to go the dinner…let’s just say it doesn’t go great. Who can learn all that etiquette so quickly? But in the end, it turns out fine.
Her new princess popularity also means her crush asks her out to a beach party. She accepts but that does mean she ends up leaving her friends behind. Josh and her end up kissing but it turns out just to be a trick for him to get famous.
When Clarisse sees the paparazzi photos, she is pissed and yells as Mia which prompts her to give up being a princess. Luckily, Joe reminds Clarisse what she was like as a teenager and she starts to understand.
When Mia realizes she must publicly renounce the throne, she decides to run away (#relatable). The fear of public speaking is no joke. But then she finds a letter from her father and decides to accept the title. And then comes the ball where Mia is able to apologize to her friends and dance with Michael.
This movie is completely delightful and magical. No one but Anne Hathaway could have played this role and I cannot wait to see what they come up with for the third film.
