18. The Goofy Movies
If you’ve never seen A Goofy Movie or its sequel, now’s your time! While these movies haven’t received the classic status as some other more popular Disney films, they should be. They tell the story of Goofy and his son Max as Max makes his way through high school and then college.
As a single father, Goofy has a hard time understanding his teenage son and ultimately does things that upset Max or ruin the plans he has set up. But their journeys ultimately lead to them better understanding each other.
In A Goofy Movie, Max impresses his crush on the last day of school and she asks him to go to a party with her. Little does he know that Goofy has other plans and wants to take Max on a fishing trip. Mad that he won’t be able to go to the party, he tells his crush he’ll be on stage at the concert they were going to watch.
After multiple fights and lies on the trip, Max and Goofy reconcile and do end up at the concert.
In An Extremely Goofy Movie, Max goes off to college and is ready to start a new chapter in his life. But Goofy doesn’t take the separation well and enrolls in college himself so he can be closer to his son.
To distract his dad, he tries to set him up with the college librarian which actually turns out pretty well. Max also forms his own skateboarding team and is shocked when Goofy is allowed to join a rival team. But when Goofy hears about the team plotting against Max, he is having none of it.
Both of these movies show how strong a bond between a father and son can be despite arguments and the pains of growing up. They are sweet, show a very real situation that lots of people go through, and are very enjoyable to watch. Goofy is not just Mickey’s clumsy friend.
