Is there any movie Meryl Streep stars in that isn’t immediately a must-watch? Just because she’s starring in it, whether as the headliner or in a supporting role, her presence tells the audience that at the very least, the movie will be worth the watch for her. Luckily, we’re getting our latest Meryl fix this October on Netflix in Steven Soderbergh’s potential future award-nominated drama The Laundromat. And surely, if the film were merely two hours of Meryl Streep doing laundry, it would still rank as one of the best new release movies streaming this month.

Based on the book Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation of Illicit Money Networks and the Global Elite by Jake Bernstein, The Laundromat centers on Ellen Martin (Meryl Streep), who embarks on a dream vacation only to have it interrupted by a wrong turn and some shady dealings. Ellen looks into a fake insurance policy that leads her to a Panama City law firm and its partners Jürgen Mossack (Gary Oldman) and Ramón Fonseca (Antonio Banderas). The matter opens Ellen’s eyes to the larger issue of tax schemes by powerful politicians.

The Laundromat comes from director Steven Soderbergh, who also directed the Netflix original film High Flying Bird, among many other award winners and blockbusters. The film first made its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September and also screened two additional film festivals, where it accumulated a 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. No matter what, though, we can more than likely expect to see Meryl Streep receive another Oscar nomination for her work because that’s just how she rolls. Catch The Laundromat’s premiere this month on Netflix.
