From the looks of it, Netflix has hit the awards season ground running with its titles premiering in October. From a Meryl Streep-led Steven Soderbergh film to a Breaking Bad spin-off movie, the streamer will surely be seeing gold at next year’s ceremonies. Another new original movie sure to generate awards buzz, Dolemite Is My Name stars Eddie Murphy in his first film role since 2016. The Academy Award-nominated actor could make a return with one of Netflix’s best new movies.
Eddie Murphy stars as Rudy Ray Moore in the biographical comedy film Dolemite Is My Name, which centers on filmmaker Moore and the character named Dolemite he played in his standup act and multiple blaxploitation films in the 1970s. When Rudy Ray Moore suffers more than a few failures in Hollywood, he decides to take on the character of Dolemite, a pimp with a cane and an abundance of anecdotes. But Moore doesn’t just want Dolemite to become a one-hit-wonder laughing-stock. Instead, he aims for a greater mainstream success no matter what it takes.
Dolemite Is My Name comes from director Craig Brewer, who also directed such films as Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan, Footloose and the upcoming Coming to America sequel. The film made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and will open in a limited theatrical run on Oct. 4 before debuting on Netflix for worldwide streaming. So far, Dolemite Is My Name holds an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Don’t miss Eddie Murphy’s critically acclaimed role when the film makes its Netflix premiere on Oct. 25.
