Netflix is no stranger to controversy. Take the debut season of 13 Reasons Why, which instigated a necessary conversation about suicide and potential glamorization of the story. (Not to mention, the series continued to depict explicit violence and abuse against minors.) There’s also the controversies surrounding the streamer’s various cancellations — just ask fans of The OA. But gripes over getting canceled feels like child’s play compared to the outpouring of dissent to last year’s original series Insatiable. Like it or not, the problematic hit’s back for another season.

Debby Ryan stars in Insatiable as Patty Bladell, an overweight teenager who loses a significant amount of weight over the summer after an accident puts her on a liquid diet. She returns to school ready to seek revenge on her bullies now that she’s flipped the script on them. When Patty’s new look catches the eye of a pageant coach, she’s now competing to become a pageant queen to prove her haters wrong. The show’s darkly comic messaging and use of a “fat suit” earned the series its stringent critical discussion.

Insatiable premiered amid a frenzy of controversy and negative press in August 2018 that his since died down, but not turned around, significantly. The series holds a 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received plenty of negative chatter regarding its depiction of stereotypes. Still, as with any series, Insatiable had its defenders. In spite of the cancellation petitions, Netflix doubled down on the controversial series on renewed it for a second season. Find out of the series will course-correct and make up for its mistakes when season 2 drops on Oct. 11.
