The Conners season 2 premiere: Darlene’s complicated love triangle
By Paul Zuniga
The Conners returned this week for its’ season 2 premiere, kicking off a whole slew of new plot threads. One of them involves a love triangle created by Darlene.
Fans who’ve kept up with The Conners probably assumed something similar would happen following the season one finale. In it, Darlene (Sara Gilbert) wound up conflicted about whether to move in with Ben (Jay R. Ferguson) or reconcile with David (Johnny Galecki). She didn’t make a decision then and now we know why.
Warning! Spoilers ahead.
In the season 2 premiere, the reveal is subtly dropped but Darlene is apparently dating both Ben and David. She’s technically not dating them both but Darlene has already invited David back into her bed, and she’s pretending that everything is still copacetic between her and Ben. They’re not having relationship problems, of course, the scenes they shared together in “Preemies, Weed, and Infidelity” hinted at them drifting away from each other.
The sad fact is that things were looking up for Darlene before she decided to sleep with David again. Yes, he’s the father of her children and Darlene’s first love, but Ben seemed to be serious about starting a family with her. David, on the other hand, has proven he’s inconsistent and can’t be trusted—just look at what happened when Blue (Juliette Lewis) was in the picture.
What’s worse is balancing these two guys is only going to end badly. Either one of them finds out before Darlene tells them the truth or she breaks up with one of them only to find out the other in incensed about what transpired beforehand.
There is, however, a chance Darlene will do the right thing and make a decision before the situation turns sour. In that scenario, she still has a shot at having some sort of happy ending. Just keep in mind that Ben and David are people with their own feelings too so there’s no telling how they’ll react once everything is out in the open.
