Unbelievable season 2: Will Netflix renew the series?
By Bryce Olin
Will Netflix renew Unbelievable starring Kaitlyn Dever, Merritt Wever and Toni Collette for season 2? We explore options for a possible second season.
The Netflix original series Unbelievable is one of the best new shows of the year. Since its premiere on Friday, Sept. 13, the show is growing in popularity and has to be one of the most popular shows on the streaming service in the last few months.
If you haven’t seen this series, you have to check it out on Netflix. It’s based on the true story of a young woman who was sexually assaulted in Lynnwood, Washington in 2008, but detectives didn’t believe her. Around the same time, two Colorado detectives who investigate a serial rapist.
The series is also based on the news story published by ProPublica, titled “An Unbelievable Story of Rape” by T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong.
The limited series stars Kaitlyn Dever, Merritt Wever and Toni Collette. The performances are incredible, and I think that’s one of the reasons this show was so successful. Wever and Collette have great chemistry that makes for a great partnership as the two detectives in the series.
So, will Netflix renew Unbelievable for season 2?
The show, created by Susannah Grant, Ayelet Waldman, and Michael Chabon, ends with a strong conclusion. I don’ think there’s more left to tell of this specific story.
The show, then, could go in two directions for the future. It can continue to follow two of its outstanding leads with Wever, who plays Det. Karen Duvall, and Collette, who plays Det. Grace Rasmussen. I don’t know what Det. Duvall and Det. Rasmussen continue to do in their careers, but perhaps, there are other stories and investigations that would work well for season 2.
I don’t know if Wever and Collette would be on board with that, so there’s definitely another route, and that’s making this show an anthology series. They could focus on other “unbelievable” cases and investigations.
While I think Wever and Collette could and should be involved in the future seasons if they want to be, an anthology series is probably the proper way to go with this series. And, I hope Netflix sees the promise in other true crime shows like Unbelievable.
When asked about the future of the series, Grant, who is the showrunner of the Netflix series, told EW that she’d love to make another season, but the story will dictate if that happens or not. Here’s her full answer on the topic, via EW:
"“This is such a high bar because this case — if there’s some case that I find or come across that has this kind of weight and remarkable storytelling and unbelievable journalism behind it, I would jump at it, absolutely. If there was something that was as exciting to me, I haven’t found it yet, but never say never.”"
At this point, it doesn’t sound like season 2 is in the works, but it’s possible! And, that’s a good thing for fans of the series.
We’ll continue to let you know updates about the future of this great series on the streaming service. Stay tuned!
