Netflix’s musical comedy Sorta like a Rockstar is continuing to add cast members including Rheny Feliz, Carol Burnett, Fred Armisen, and Justina Machado.
Netflix has an excellent cast for their new musical comedy Sorta Like a Rockstar. Rheny Feliz, Carol Burnett, and Justina Machado have joined the cast and will star alongside Auli’i Cravalho in the film, according to a report for Deadline.
Sorta like a Rockstar is an adaptation of Matthew Quick’s 2010 young adult novel of the same name. The film is being produced by Gotham Group’s Lee Stollman and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Temple Hill, according to the report.
The film tells the story of Amber Appleton, a teenager who suffers a tragedy that shakes her worldview, according to the report. Cravalho (Moana) will be portraying Amber in the upcoming film.
Here is the full synopsis of the book, via Google Books:
"Amber Appleton lives in a bus. Ever since her mom’s boyfriend kicked them out, Amber, her mom, and her totally loyal dog, Bobby Big Boy (aka Thrice B) have been camped out in the back of Hello Yellow (the school bus her mom drives). Still, Amber, the self-proclaimed princess of hope and girl of unyielding optimism, refuses to sweat the bad stuff. But when a fatal tragedy threatens Amber’s optimism–and her way of life, can Amber continue to be the rock star of hope?"
According to the report, production is supposed to start next month with Brett Haley (Hearts beat Loud) signing on to replace actress Bryce Dallas Howard as the film’s director. Howard had left the project due to scheduling conflicts, but Haley’s experience in producing musicals will be a plus for Sorta like a Rockstar.
So far, an all-star cast and a great storyline all add up to movie musical with all the right ingredients to be a hit. The Netflix feature is still looking for future cast members to add to their already talented crew.

I am looking forward to seeing the completed project not only because Cravalho did an amazing job in Moana, but also because of the addition of Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Burnett. This woman is absolutely amazing and I may be dating myself, but I adored The Carol Burnett show, which ran for eleven seasons, and she also starred in the musical Annie. Burnett has done it all, acting, singing, television series, comedies and musicals. Adding her to an already wonderful cast with her experience and larger than life personality is an added boon.
Then you also have Armisen who is best known for starring in Saturday Night Live. Just like I couldn’t get enough of The Carol Burnett Show, I couldn’t get enough of Saturday Night Live. Armisen like Burnett, has done it all and with Armisen inthis amazing cast, I don’t see how Netflix can’t have a hit with Sorta like a Rockstar.
Stay tuned as we continue to get updates and more news on the progress of Sorta Like A Rockstar.
