Crisis On Infinite Earths: Which Smallville actors should join the massive crossover?
By Paul Zuniga
Now that Tom Welling and Erica Durance are reprising their Smallville roles in the Crisis On Infinite Earths event, the question remains: Will they be joined by any of their former castmates?
After news got out that Tom Welling would return to reprise his role as Clark Kent for this year’s Arrowverse crossover, speculation mounted on who else would join him. Now, we know that Erica Durance, who portrayed Lois Lane on Smallville, will also make an appearance in “Crisis On Infinite Earths.”
While details on her role are scant, the initial report from Deadline indicates that audiences will learn where Clark and Lois’ story led them. Mind you, this is 10 plus years after the end of Smallville. Our guess is they remained in Metropolis—what else would Superman and Lois Lane do?
With both of these Smallville mainstays returning, it raises the question of whether or not The CW has plans to debut some other familiar faces. There are a few who can’t show up because of legal issues but most of the cast can return for a brief appearance.
As far as who should be on the list of cameos, there’s only one character who needs to be considered: Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum). While Jon Cryer’s iteration of Lex has been acceptable, no one puts on the spectacle like Rosenbaum. Plus, fans are still crazy about him even after 10 years which makes his casting seem like a no-brainer.
On the opposite side of the good/evil spectrum, the “Crisis On Infinite Earths” event could also serve as a way to assemble a more fitting Justice League. The attempts by Smallville’s cast were mocked in their early years due to the poor-quality costumes and low-budget CGI but perhaps things can change with a few updates.
Aquaman, for instance, wasn’t too bad and The CW hasn’t really introduced any version of the character yet. Their lack of one makes “Crisis On Infinite Earths” the perfect opportunity to bring him in. Of course, that all depends on Alan Ritchson — he’s the only actor to play a live-action version of Aquaman outside the movie universe.
There’s also the matter of Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) being addressed. She played a more significant role on Smallville before she was basically written out of the show and replaced by Lois Lane. She deserves at least a shoutout, if not an entire subplot devoted to a complicated love triangle between herself, Clark, and Lois.
Life might not have turned exactly how we expected it to for Welling’s Clark Kent and Durance’s Lois Lane. The only detail provided thus far is that audiences will see where their lives have taken them, but that doesn’t mean it ended well. For all we know, they parted ways and Clark found a way to reunite with Lana. A lot would need to happen for that scenario to be true but it’s not an outlandish idea.
