Premiere date: Sept. 13
Marianne beat the official fall TV season and premiered a bit earlier. If you’ve already watched Marianne on Netflix, you already know that it’s in the witch’s nature to stay a step ahead of all of us, anyway. But, if you haven’t, you will want to meet Marianne as soon as possible.
Netflix’s Marianne is a French series that premiered just in time for Friday the 13th, but has yet to be discovered by a large audience. This is typical for a foreign series. It always does take a tad longer for foreign hidden gems to be found. Marianne, however, will quickly make its presence known once you give her a chance. It’s the latest series to give audiences restless nights.
The horror series follows Emma (Victorie Du Bois), a horror novelist who writes about the adventures (or misadventures, rather) of Lizzie Larck, a woman trying to stop an evil witch named Marianne. The inspiration for her stories are drawn from Emma’s own childhood nightmares she suffered as a kid. To combat her terrors, Emma created Lizzie Larck.
This work for Emma, at least for a while. But when she decides to stop writing about Marianne and move on to other stories, the witch returns. As it turns out, she’s very real and back to haunt Emma and everyone she cares about until Emma writes again. Instead, Emma and her friends decide to unite and take Marianne down, but she never leaves empty-handed.
The jump scares are frightening and the terror Marianne unleashes is enough to give you nightmares! It’s a slow burn as it does take 2-3 episodes to develop, but it’s worth the wait. And it all results in a satisfying finale that’ll leave us with dozens of questions.
