17. Selena: The Series
Premiere date: Late fall
Selena: The Series will reportedly follow Selena Quintanilla, the legendary and beloved Mexican-American Tejano singer known simply as Selena. The drama series will center on young Selena as she grows to realize her dreams of becoming a singer. She has the support of her family, but they must make tough choices in order to make Selena’s dreams come true.
Unfortunately, as you all already know, Selena’s glory days were cut short just as she began to become a legend when Yolanda Saldivar, Selena’s fan club manager, kills her during an argument. Her album, Dreaming of You, was released posthumously and debuted on the Billboard 200, Selena became the first Latin artist to break into the list.
Unlike the popular movie (starring Jennifer Lopez) that also follows Selena’s climb to stardom and fall, Netflix’s Selena: The Series will focus more on the young artist’s coming-of-age story. It will reportedly be split into two parts.
Christian Serratos (The Walking Dead) will play Selena, the rest of the cast has yet to be announced. Reportedly, Selena’s family is fully involved in the series, as well, and have given Netflix its support. Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister, commented how excited they are to partner with Netflix to give fans a “never-before-seen glimpse at our story.”
There is no premiere date set for Selena: The Series just yet, but critics and fans are expecting Netflix to surprise us with a late fall premiere. This could be one of the last fall TV shows that’s released, and it’s not unlike Netflix to save the best for last.
